Quick Q&A with PATRICK S. TOMLINSON

TomlinsonP-AuthorPicLet’s start with an introduction: Who is Patrick Tomlinson?

Author, comic, provocateur, husband, kind of an ass.

Your new novel, Gate Crashers, was just published by Tor Books. It looks rather fun: How would you introduce it to a potential reader?

First Contact meets Armageddon and hilarity ensues.

Is it part of a series?

It’s part of a universe at the very least. Tor’s bought three books at a minimum, although I have ideas for half a dozen or more. The sequel, Starship Repo, is already written and turned in. Each book will have commonality with the events of the larger universe, which we’re calling The Breach, but the intention is to have each book be a new jumping off point for readers and stand-alone to a large degree. Think Terry Prachett’s Discworld books. Like that. Continue reading

Upcoming: GATE CRASHERS by Patrick S. Tomlinson (Tor Books)

TomlinsonPS-GateCrashersUSThere is a growing number of authors writing more humorous and lighter science fiction and fantasy, suggesting we are going through one of the cyclical tonal shifts within the genres (I think it’s fair to say that many were feeling wearied by the grimdark influence on the SFF genres). Patrick S. Tomlinson‘s next novel, Gate Crashers sounds like it will be a lot of fun. Published on June 26th by Tor Books, here’s the synopsis:

The only thing as infinite and expansive as the universe is humanity’s unquestionable ability to make bad decisions.

Humankind ventures further into the galaxy than ever before… and immediately causes an intergalactic incident. In their infinite wisdom, the crew of the exploration vessel Magellan, or as she prefers “Maggie,” decides to bring the alienstructure they just found back to Earth. The only problem? The aliens are awfully fond of that structure.

A planet full of bumbling, highly evolved primates has just put itself on a collision course with a far wider, and more hostile, galaxy that is stranger than anyone can possibly imagine.

Tomlinson’s previous novels include the Children of a Dead Earth trilogy, published by Angry Robot Books. Gate Crashers will be published by Tor Books in North America and in the UK.

Guest Post: “Intro to Genre” by Patrick S. Tomlinson

TomlinsonP-AuthorPicOkay, so you’re writing your first novel. Excellent! Now stop. Writing novels is for amateurs. There’s groundwork that has to be in place before you begin. The sort of preparations that will lay the foundations for your assured success.

First things first, you need to sit alone in your study and drink an entire bottle of single-malt scotch while all the illusions about the world and the people you hold dear slowly unravel, until you are face to face with a naked singularity of total truth.

Wait, you don’t have single-malt scotch in your liquor cabinet? Jesus Christ, kid, get yourself together. You’re in the majors now and you’re still acting like a Double A player. Have some self-respect. All the best writers are barely-functioning alcoholics. You’re not even allowed to call yourself an author until you’ve gone on this whiskey-fueled vision quest. Do you want this or not? Continue reading
