Upcoming: RESIST by Within Temptation (Spinefarm Records)

Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation return this year with Resist, their first album since 2014’s Hydra. A band I have been listening to for decades, I’m really looking forward to it (they are one of the bands whose new music I pre-order immediately).

They have already released the first single from the record, “The Reckoning”, which features guest vocals from Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach. (I’ve included the video, below.) The aforementioned Hydra featured a number of excellent guest appearances, too (including Xzibit, which was a surprise — but a collaboration that really worked).

If you’re interested in truly epic, stirring, cinematic metal with pop sensibilities, then I highly recommend you check them out. They’ve come a long way since their Kate Bush-worshipping early years, and have continued to refresh their sound with each new album — while simultaneously never losing what makes them special and stand out.

Resist is due to be released on December 14th by Spinefarm Records (one of my favourite labels), and will be available in CD, Vinyl, MP3 and a Deluxe edition (which includes a complete set of instrumental versions — I’m sure they’re great, but Sharon den Adel’s vocals are so good, I’m not sure why you’d want to cut them out…). Here’s the track listing:

  1. The Reckoning [feat. Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach]
  2. Endless War
  3. Raise Your Banner [feat. Anders Fridén of In Flames]
  4. Supernova
  5. Holy Ground
  6. In Vain
  7. Firelight [feat. Jasper Steverlinck of Arid]
  8. Mad World
  9. Mercy Mirror
  10. Trophy Hunter

Here’s the video for “The Recockoning”…
