Upcoming: ALIEN CLAY by Adrian Tchaikovsky (Tor UK)

TchaikovskyA-AlienClayUKHCI stumbled across Alien Clay while looking for a different book by Adrian Tchaikovsky, but it should come as no surprise to anyone who’s been following CR for even a short while that I am a big fan of the author’s work, so it is always nice to learn of another upcoming book! This is obviously now on my Most Anticipated in 2024 list. Due to be published next year in the UK by Tor Books, here’s the synopsis for this “thrilling far-future adventure”:

The planet of Kiln is where the tyrannical Mandate keeps its prison colony, and for inmates the journey there is always a one-way trip. One such prisoner is Professor Arton Daghdev, xeno-ecologist and political dissident. Soon after arrival he discovers that Kiln has a secret. Humanity is not the first intelligent life to set foot there.

In the midst a ravenous, chaotic ecosystem are the ruins of a civilization, but who were the vanished builders and where did they go? If he can survive both the harsh rule of the camp commandant and the alien horrors of the world around him, then Arton has a chance at making a discovery that might just transform not only Kiln but distant Earth as well.

Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Alien Clay is due to be published by Tor Books in the UK, on March 28th, 2024. No information about a North American publisher, at time of writing, but many of the author’s previous novels have been published across the Pond by Orbit Books.

Upcoming: THE LAST DAYS OF THE MIDNIGHT RAMBLERS by Sarah Tomlinson (Flatiron)

TomlinsonS-LastDaysOfTheMidnightRamblersUSHCIt’s always interesting to see how a smash-hit book can spur the rise of a mini-genre, and there’s no denying that Taylor Jenkins-Reid’s Daisy Jones & the Six generated a lot of interest in music-related fiction. As a long-time music fan/obsessive, I naturally am very taken by the genre — not only is Daisy Jones… one of my recent favourites, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed many other novels that have popped up in the sub-genre (e.g., Emma Brodie’s Songs in Ursa Major). So, I’m always on the look-out for more music-related fiction.

In The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers, due out in February 2024, Sarah Tomlinson takes an intriguing new approach to the genre. Here’s the synopsis:

Three Rock & Roll icons. Two explosive tell-all memoirs. One ghostwriter caught in the middle.

Anke Berben is ready to tell all. A legendary model and style icon, she reveled in headline-grabbing romances with not one but three members of the hugely influential rock band the Midnight Ramblers. The band members were as famous for their backstage drama as for their music, and Anke is the only one who fully understands the tangled relationships, betrayals, and suspicions that have added to the Ramblers’ enduring appeal and mystique. That is most evident in the mystery around Anke’s role in the death of Mal, the band’s founder and Anke’s husband, in 1969.

When Mari Hawthorn accepts the job to work with Anke on her memoir, she is dead set on getting to the truth of Mal’s death. She has always been deft at navigating the fatal charms of celebrities, having grown up with a narcissistic, alcoholic father. As she ingratiates herself into the world of the band, she grows enchanted, against her better judgment, by these legendary rock stars. She knows she can’t get pulled in too deep, otherwise she’ll compromise her objectivity — and her integrity.

Love the premise, and am very much looking forward to reading this.

Sarah Tomlinson’s The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers is due to be published by Flatiron Books in North America and in the UK, on February 13th, 2024.

Upcoming: TOMORROW’S CHILDREN by Daniel Polansky (Angry Robot)

PolanskyD-TomorrowsChildrenI’ve been a fan of Daniel Polansky‘s writing ever since I read an early review copy of 2011’s Straight Razor Cure (Low Town in North America). The Low Town trilogy remains one of my favourite fantasy trilogies, and each new novel (or novella) by the author has been a must-read for me. Early next year, Angry Robot Books are due to publish the author’s latest novel, Tomorrow’s Children — as it happens, one that falls in a sub-genre that is also very much of interest to me: post-apocalyptic New York City. Here’s the synopsis:

A high-octane post-apocalyptic romp set in the ruins of Manhattan

Tomorrow, the funk descends on Manhattan – a noxious cloud which separates the island from the rest of the world and mutates the population.

Some generations on, the surviving population exists amid the rubble of modernity, wearing our cast-off clothing, worshipping celebrities as dim gods and using emojis in place or written language. The Island exists in a state of uneasy peace, with each neighborhood an independent fiefdom, protecting itself with scrap metal spears and Molotov cocktails.

But something new has come to the Island, the first tourist in centuries, and this uneasy equilibrium is about to shatter…

I’m really looking forward to reading this.

Daniel Polansky’s Tomorrow’s Children is due to be published by Angry Robot Books in North America and in the UK, on February 27th, 2024.

Upcoming: THE TAINTED CUP by Robert Jackson Bennett (Del Rey)

BennettRJ-TaintedCupUSHCI stumbled across Robert Jackson Bennett‘s next novel, The Tainted Cup, while browsing NetGalley yesterday. As a long-time fan of the author’s work (going back to 2011’s The Company Man), I was immediately intrigued. If you haven’t tried Bennett’s work, yet, I strongly recommend you give it a try — either by diving into one of his fantasy trilogies (the Divine Cities and Founders trilogies), or, if you want a smaller commitment, his novella Vigilance is also excellent.

The author has described The Tainted Cup as “a murder mystery set in a fantasy empire”, and the premise suggests a Holmesian inspiration, too. Which all sounds very much like my cup of tea. Here’s the synopsis:

An eccentric detective and her long-suffering assistant untangle a web of magic, deceit, and murder in this sparkling fantasy reimagining of the classic crime novel…

In Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high Imperial officer lies dead — killed, to all appearances, when a tree spontaneously erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the Leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible.

Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times — and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home.

At her side is her new assistant, Dinios Kol. Din is an engraver, magically altered in ways that make him the perfect aide to Ana’s brilliance.

Din finds himself at turns scandalized, perplexed, and utterly infuriated by his new superior — but as the case unfolds and Ana’s mind leaps from one startling deduction to the next, he must grudgingly admit that she is, indeed, the Empire’s greatest detective.

As the two close in on a mastermind and uncover a scheme that threatens the safety of the Empire itself, Din realizes he’s barely begun to assemble the puzzle that is Ana Dolabra — and wonders how long he’ll be able to keep his own secrets safe from her piercing intellect.

Robert Jackson Bennett’s The Tainted Cup is due to be published by Del Rey in North America and in the UK, on February 6th, 2024.
